Dwie godziny to kupa czasu. Postanowiłem wejść do księgarni i kupić pierwszą lepszą książkę – dosłownie.

Little time ago I read PHOTOSHOP magazine for the first time. Polish edition of course. Articles inside maybe weren’t very exciting, but quite educating. Generally it was pretty good level overall. The main drawback is that the magazine is too small. There were articles and tutorials for every level of advancement, but only one or two for each. This way from an 80-page magazine I found only two articles that interested me.

I used to work a lot with Photoshop in the past, but it was usually simple photo editing. I never needed to get into advanced techniques and since I worked a lot – I didn’t. Now, when I have more time for myself, I can spare more time on things that interest me. And so I uses two tutorials to make the following work. One tutorial was about portrait editing, to get the effect as you see, and the second showed how to use zoomify plugin in PS CS3. Zoomify lets you zoom very large images fast, and I guess I will use it often now.

Unfortunately the original photo wasn’t too sharp, so the overall effect while zooming is not so spectacular as it should be.

I like to drink warm yerba mate sometimes, even though I am not such a hotspur like some of my friends or citizens of South America. Once I even bought a gourd – it is very nice to sip such infusion through a bombilla on a lazy afternoon. Bombilla is a special metal pipe closed on one end, but with little holes. This way parts of the herb don’t go into the pipe.

If you don’t know what is yerba mate, then here I rush to explain. Simply it is a healthier replacement for the tea. Different taste, more vitamins and more stimulating. The main advantage for me is that you can pour water of any temperature onto the herbs and you will still get all the nice things out of it. If one doesn’t like its taste then you can even pour orange juice and then you will receive a drink called ‘mate russo’. Sweet.

Sok Noni to dosyć kontrowersyjny napój.

But returning to Akira, as I said, it impressed me a lot. Even though it is pretty old anime, the aesthetic sphere of the anime stands very high.
The incoming cholecystectomy doesn’t bother me. The thing that I have to be on a special diet bothers me a lot. No chocolate. No eggs. Absolutely no fried food. No fresh bread(!?) …and the worst of all – no strong coffe! I can only drink very light coffe from now on. There is much more of what I cannot eat now, but the list is too long to put it here. Anyway…

…what am I supposed to eat now?! :-/

And here comes the idea. I wonder if a restaurant having special menus for all people who are on different kinds of diets would survive on market? I guess there are very many people who cannot eat different things but they would like to eat something tasty and yet they have to do everything themselves.

Imagine such a restaurant – for example you got diabetes, you simply ask for a special diabetes menu and you can choose anything you like without worrying that it will make you sick. And it tastes well (hopefully).

I wonder if there is such a restaurant somewhere there. In the recent days I found out that I’ve got some gallstones.

It’s been a while since I bought my Nokia E51 and it seems not so new and great anymore after iPhone and so many other mobile phones have been released. Well, I think it still kicks ass. When I was looking for a new cell phone I was mainly thinking of Internet browsing (using Wi-Fi), checking e-mails and reading ebooks. Nokia E51 does all these things and many more. Since it works on an open source Symbian S60 system, I can download and install (and I did) very many applications like movie player, mp3 player, internet radio (cool!), maps and whatever else comes to your mind.

To be honest, I almost don’t use mp3 player and movie player, I use internet radio from time to time, but I simply love the ebook reader I installed – MobiReader. When I tell people that I read books on my phone, they don’t believe and sometimes they laugh. In fact I find it much easier to read books on my mobile, because the screen is always well visible despite of the light in a room or wherever I am at that moment. It is also very light while big books tire my hand pretty fast. One may tell the screen is small (which is untrue) so the letters will be so little that reading them will tire one’s eyes, but you can amend the size of the letters. Let’s avoid too much talking. Look for yourself (click to enlarge).

What else? Nah, not much, so I will just throw some specifications:

Key Features are:

HSDPA

100 Grams in weight

16 Million colours, 2 inches 240×320 pixels display

WiFi with VOIP capabilities

I am trying to participate in some photo contests lately as they motivate me to do things I wouldn’t dare in other way.

This photo is for the contest called “People’s faces” or maybe “People’s aspects”?

Every time I see some photo contest topic, first things that come to my mind are the dark ones. For example there was a topic “Places worth visiting” some time ago. I imagine people would send images of beautiful places. I planned to go to dog’s shelter, slaughterhouse, dump.. I regret I didn’t do that after all, guess I am still little too shy and lazy for such trips.

This topic was easier. I had a man on my mind to ask for posing, but he was absent. I spent half an hour wandering around railway station and finally spotted this man on the market square in Krakow. I couldn’t make myself to talk to him and ask him to pose. I felt so embarrassed. I followed him for 20 minutes, watching him begging for money, taking food out of trash cans, waiting for the right time. Finally asked him to pose for me and he agreed.

He said he is homeless for last 12 years and an alcoholic too and that he used to be a commando. I regret I didn’t ask him about his age or more information about his life.

I couldn’t find anything really interesting around me and swans are always looking good. I decided to try making a strobist photo, with very strong flashes from short distance. I went to Vistula river, near Wawel castle and found a nice place where I could throw bread pieces on ground. Soon a couple of young, gray swans came, but they didn’t look very well. Finally some adult swans swam to me and I started to shoot for next half an hour. It took 10-15 seconds for my flashes to recover after each shot but all went good and I made few photos that look very nice.

The guy on the motorcycle passed me driving around 60-80 km/h. I followed him with my eyes thinking “He is driving too fast, it is dangerous…” and next second I saw a car turning left from an opposite lane. The man in a car must have noticed him too late and was already crossing motorcyclist’s way. Quite fast, but still too slow. The man on a motorcycle broke in panic – too late, his motor-bike started to turn and slide, approaching its fate with deadly speed. So fast. Motorcycle hammered into a car, and the man rolled over it, crushing into car’s corner. The car was still in movement and the motorcyclist bounced 5 meters to the right like a mannequin. I froze for a moment, cursing aloud. Half second later man’s body lied with no movement. I was sure he was dead.

In seconds everyone was calling 112 and people started to run towards the body. I couldn’t decide what to do.

Probably a course of first aid would be a good idea… :-/. The only thing I remembered from classes was that one musn’t move the body in case of spine damage.

I could see the car, an opened airbag, and car’s interior full of smoke. I moved towards the place to see more details. I didn’t even dream about helping in any way – I wouldn’t know what to do. I felt shame.

In the meanwhile the man recovered. Spitting with blood he asked to take his helmet off. I was surprised he was able to talk. I was surprised he was alive! He even tried to stand up, but a dozen of hands pulled him back.

He moved his legs (thank gods). He complained about the pain in his arm, probably broken…

The ambulance came in 6 minutes, fire fighters in 9 and police few minutes later. I went away.

I will never forget the moment he hit the car and flied in the air like a puppet… such a shocking view.Yesterday I witnessed a motor accident which had happened, like, 100 mts from me.

I could attend Kraftwerk concert at Nowa Huta in Krakow. I was pretty excited about the whole thing, because Huta is usually closed to the public. I was thinking about taking my new camera to the concert but I’ve read that taking photos is not allowed. The place was huge and was filled with few thousands of people. Me and my friend had places on the top platform, so we had a very good view on everything. Once the concert started, dozens and dozens of people took their mobile phones out and started to shoot photos. Back in the past people used to light their lighters, but these days it looked like mobile phones took over their role. It looked impressive and quite funny, having in mind that taking pictures was oficially not allowed. I guess they (Kraftwerk PR section) predicted that and made that rule only to make the whole event more prestigious. Anyway, I enjoyed the concert quite a lot. It was cool on the start, little monotous in the middle and entertaining at the end, when they put UV costumes on.

It is a used Nikon D2X, 18-135 lens and SB-800 flash. The camera works like gold but unfortunately I had to exchange the flash. It was a very painful experience to find out that my SB-800 simply stopped flashing after 30 minutes of work, and it happened during a wedding I was to photograph… very painful.

But besides that, all is going well. I am trying to participate in different photo competitions and recently I even found a job as a photographer and I feel great about it.

Dreszcz mnie przechodzi, kiedy tego słucham. Ciekaw jestem, kim będzie za 20 lat.

Klaudia Kulawik – zapamiętam sobie to imię.

Piosenka. A poruszyła mnie jakby sama śmierć i życie zatańczyły mi przed oczami walca.

Nadzwyczajne!

Przejmujące, dogłębne i pełne przeżywanie pieśni.

Ponownie oglądam jej występ i (klik) ponownie wyciska mi łzy. Ba!

Brrr…

These days St. Petersburg is more expensive than London (Cider for 5 pounds, small beer for 2.5 pounds) so we mostly stayed at home (which is about half an hour by train from the center). From our previous trips I knew that I will get bored fast so I took my old Minolta 7i with some macro rings and tried to make some macro photos – with poor result. Macro rings suck – aberration is so big that only small center of the photo can be framed. Have a look:

This is ‘Mucha’, an old bitch, who agreed to take few photos of her in macro. Her hair look like hedgehog’s spikes.

I don’t even have a driving licence, but I am thinking more and more about buying myself a car. It started with my wife, who desparatly wants one and even made a license recently. As a pragmatic person I usually don’t even think about stuff I cannot afford, but this time I must admit – a car would be a real help in our life. Shopping, trips, holidays, work, late parties etc. etc.

At the actual point we can consider used cars only and we are focusing to buy VW Golf III or IV. We will probably try to import it from Germany, find some old man, who used it only for sunday services for last years or something like it. I wonder if we will have such a luck when it comes to it.

Honestly, the whole idea scares me a little. Registering the car in Poland, paying car insurance, probable car repairs, possible car accidents, holes in the streets (still many of them in Poland), gasoline prices going up all the time (even though market prices go down recently)… ufff. Now I am scared ;-]. Did I miss anything?

Good thing I cannot buy it now ;-D.

If there was a possibility my wife would probably rape me to take a car loan, but fortunately I am a freelancer and I cannot take one. Ha!I don’t even have a driving licence, but I am thinking more and more about buying myself a car.
Oglądałem wczoraj film dokumentalny pt. “Zeitgeist” – być może już o nim słyszeliście. To niezależna produkcja ukazująca historię i współczesny świat w mało dotąd znanym kontekście.

Film zebrał wiele krytyki jak również zdobył pierwszą nagrodę na Best Feature Documentary/Artivist Spirit at the 4th Annual Artivists Awards in 2008 in Hollywood, CA.

Po kilku minutach takiego zerkania i wymieniania uwag ze swoimi znajomymi podeszła do mnie i bez ogródek spytała – “Are you straight or gay?” – zbaraniałem. – “W-what?”

Those two are from competing Cracovian football fan clubs. Didn’t let me show their faces as they would be troubled by people from both fan clubs.
